Anne Vallayer-Coster (1744-1818) was twenty-five years old when she was admitted to the French Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris--one of only four women in the late eighteenth century. Throughout the course of her career, Vallayer-Coster painted dozens of sensual still-life paintings, representing flowers, shells and minerals, guns and game. She also produced large, complex allegories of art, nature, and war. In this webinar, we will study the range of textures that Vallayer-Coster depicted, and discuss the perceived "femininity" of her subject matter and painting techniques.

Dr. Kelsey Brosnan earned her PhD in Art History at Rutgers University with a dissertation entitled "Seductive Surfaces: The Still-Life Paintings of Anne Vallayer-Coster (1744-1818)." Now in the Impressionist and Modern Art Department at Christie's, she has previously worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and the Art History Department at the University of Vermont.
